Social Literacy Book D5
Unit D5, Services, begins with a fable about a wandering people, stranded in the wilderness, who set up a new community. At first they fear having to survive alone, but gradually they co-operate and set up a number of community services. This fable is an introduction to the concept of services and why people cooperate in groups called communities. By the end of the unit, students are applying the concept of community service to an investigation of their own community. Building upon concepts of 'dependence', 'co-operation', 'relationships', and 'rules' introduced in the preceding units of this series, in this and the following, final unit, the concept of 'community', which is the major theme of the series, is now introduced and applied. The Social Literacy Project has developed this unit as part of an interdisciplinary social science course for primary and secondary schools. The goal of social literacy is for students to develop a framework of social concepts as tools for social understanding and active, confident social participation.
